Panther State Forest
Panther State Forest is West Virginia's southernmost state forest and occupies 7,810 rugged acres where you can escape in nature and enjoy a range of outdoor amenities. During the summer, visitors can cool off in the swimming pool or watch their kids splash in the wading pool. Panther State Forest is also a great place to enjoy hunting and fishing. Designated areas in the forest are open to hunting and Panther Creek is stocked seasonally with trout. All hunters and anglers must have a valid West Virginia hunting or fishing license and stamps and follow all regulations.

Henrietta Dismukes Hospital Site

Marker and nurses home for the Henrietta Dismukes Hospital—a hospital that served black coal miners and their families in the early 20th century.

McDonald Plantation Civil War Trail Sign

This was the site of a 7,000-acre farm during the war, owned by William McDonald, who sided with the Confederates in this divided county. The main house was burned in 1862 during a Union raid.

Civil War Romance Sign

Confederate soldier Thompson Walker, in bad health and on a long road home after being released from Point Lookout (MD) prison in 1865, was nursed back to health and hidden by Martilia Walker, daughter of a staunch Unionist. A romance blossomed and they were married Dec 11, 1866.

Coal Heritage Trail Interpretive Center

Bramwell Depot is a restored, historic train depot and a spot on the Coal Heritage Trail. It's located at the end of Commercial Row in Downtown Bramwell. This small town is known for the large homes of old coal barons.

This state-of-the-art facility focuses on the arts in southern West Virginia. The line-up includes children's musicals, broadway shows, symphony performances and much more.

Almost Heaven Swing at East River Mountain Overlook

This Almost Heaven Swing is perched in the heart of Bluefield, along Route 598. This swing is located just outside of the East River Mountain Overlook parking lot and makes for a beautiful setting to watch the sunset.

Pinnacle Rock State Park
Pinnacle Rock State Park is known for the 3,100-foot sandstone formation that gives the park its name. Located on U.S. Route 52 near Bramwell in Mercer County, the park includes a wooded area with picnic facilities, hiking trails and a fishing lake. An overlook from atop Pinnacle Rock is a popular destination and favorite photo spot for park visitors.

Brush Creek Falls
Brush Creek Falls roars along a tributary of the Bluestone River – standing at over 30 feet tall in Mercer County. Start at the small parking area and take the Brush Creek Falls Trail a quarter mile before reaching this scenic cascade. To make a day of your adventures, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy before exploring the nearby Camp Creek State Park.

Campbell Falls
Well-known for its picturesque backdrop, Campbell Falls can be found within Camp Creek State Park in the mountains of Mercer County. With a multitude of shelves, all 15 feet of these cascades pour into an oval pool – the perfect location for fishing or swimming in warmer weather. Start on Camp Creek Road, before stopping at a small pull-off and following a short path to this roadside beauty.

Coalwood Rocket Memorial

Homer Hickam, author, veteran, and former NASA engineer, is known for his best-selling memoir "Rocket Boys." In it, he tells the story about his aspirations of becoming a rocket scientist as a young boy while growing up in Coalwood, West Virginia. This memoir was adapted into a feature film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern. The rocket statue commemorates Hickam as a hometown hero.
